The number one of Eli Tomac would yearn to rebound after his performance in Indianapolis, believing that he was much more equipped for action in Detroit than that of the Hoosier State last week. Though never one to bow out due to fatigue or injury, it was apparent that Tomac’s condition in Indy was less than one-hundred percent. Nevertheless, he answered the call as the bell was rang for Detroit, blistering the racing canvas to arrive fifth prior to practice concluding. From that point and onward, Tomac was a sharp-shooter throughout the opening laps of his heat race. Lines had been established by both 250cc heats, and the likes of 450cc (heat one), as he was stationed in the second division. Therefore his output in these subtle grooves was hard for many in attendance to fathom, as he claimed a fourth-place position with the green flag waving. Fans in the crowd would cheer and hope for Tomac to blitz his way by Aaron Plessinger, Ken Roczen, and Chase Sexton ahead of him; however that notion would never come to fruition, with the number one residing fourth throughout the eight-lap duration. It wasn’t as though he was off-pace from that of Sexton (who eventually won), but there was little engagement with the outright, earth-shattering persona of old, that Tomac carried in the early rounds of the series. Eventually residing fourth as the dust settled, he would seek redemption for the final battle (i.e. main event) that was just around the corner. His pace to begin the final showcase was solidified in the fourth-place residency, but he quickly advanced to third as Adam Cianciarulo briefly descended through the running order. Now third, he would make a daring pass in the opening segment of the switchback section, blitzing down the initial straightaway with Cooper Webb on his outside. Slamming the door shut in the corners that followed, it seemed as though Tomac was now solidified in second. But a miscalculated line choice in the step-on/step-off section just seconds thereafter would have Webb working his way back around, with Justin Barcia taking advantage of Tomac’s lapse of momentum (and block-passing him just before the finish-line)! He wasn’t done being overtaken though, unfortunately, as Sexton would leap to the inside before the final rhythm lane on the track; moving him to the outside in the initial right-hander, as he slid from fourth to fifth. That’s as far as he would fall though, beginning to mount a charge into podium territory as Justin Barcia then began to fatigue and made a mistake (with around seven minutes on the clock) in the left-handed bend following the “SX” double. That was fourth, and his last spot to be obtained, would come at the expense of Aaron Plessinger, who crashed while nearing the checkered flag. Being “bumped-up” to third with only a few circuits to go, would have him well within the points hunt; keeping him close while dealing with injuries, and in the fight as the series moves forward to Seattle.
