One final outdoor race, would be on the itinerary for Yamaha’s Phil Nicoletti. The fan-favorite had competed within the premier circuit for countless years now, and aspired to execute a memorable performance while stationed in Indiana on Saturday. Despite registering a seventeenth-place gate choice, Nicoletti’s racing instinct would trump the game-planning of numerous other opponents, acquiring the hole-shot designation as he battled at the front of the pack. With names like Sexton, Plessinger, Lawrence, and Tomac all around him, Nicoletti knew that the pace that was conducted by the elite members of the division would be extremely fast...but he was willing to latch onto the aforementioned competitors for as long as possible. He weaved through the ruts with an upright style, which wasn’t necessarily flashy when in discussion of the new-aged style, but it was undeniably efficient. Nicoletti was a veteran of the game in all facets, and used his race-craft to constantly piece together well-respected lap-times — defending an eventual charge from Christian Craig, after battling with Jason Anderson and Justin Cooper for significant portion of time. Malcolm Stewart would also pass Nicoletti, but when the Floridian displayed a multitude of sweeping angles upon various entrances to corners...Nicoletti would attempt to mirror the pathways of the athlete aboard the number twenty-seven. The additional energy saved, acted as an attribute that could defend his (Nicoletti’s) standing from that of Freddie Noren and Christian Craig when the two-lap board was showcased. Though fatigue was rising and energy levels were depleting, Nicoletti remained resilient through the concluding right-handed bend...earning a final score of eighth. After roughly five minutes of competition in the second moto, Nicoletti had secured eighth, yet again — though Devin Simonson was continuing to present a significant amount of pressure from only bike lengths behind. He was excelling when flying beneath the Fly Racing banner, jumping through the moguls thereafter before ducking under the bridge...all the while embracing the applause from the crowd. There was an urgency about Phil Nicoletti’s riding that had to be acknowledged, where he was presenting a surplus of effort to make a lasting impression on the tour as a whole. He would battle with Christian Craig for almost the entirety of the moto, and displayed remarkable skills for his supporting cast and sponsors that had led him to this point in his career. Through the final laps, and eventual checkered flag, Nicoletti’s position within the eighth-place residency was one that was admired by all in attendance...and he resided there as all concluded, for seventh overall on the day!
