With the 2023 450MX AMA Pro Motocross Championship now claimed, Honda’s Jett Lawrence would seek to secure as many moto victories as possible prior to the series concluding. However, the task of finalizing this year with perfection would be extremely difficult, with the likes of Chase Sexton, Dylan Ferrandis, and a number of others constantly seeking to overtake him. The Australian would thrive as pressure continued to heighten in the state of Maryland though, where Lawrence’s reaction time from the opening gate would equate to a position around the top-ten...which left many in disbelief, considering the trajectory in which he’d been on. However, Lawrence immediately began to make moves — passing riders in bundles while swiping tear-offs and would be on pace to reach the top-five by the end of lap two. Methodically, in the minutes that followed, Lawrence would pass the likes of Justin Barcia, Adam Cianciaurlo, and eventually Aaron Plessinger (just before the mechanic’s area); which secured the number-one spot, while looking toward the twenty-minute mark on the clock. Once into the lead, there was little that the opposition could do, to try and deter the Australian. He was marvelous amongst the ever-changing terrain — where his fluidity embodied rolling speed and outright momentum amongst the grooves, that simply couldn’t be replicated. And with Chase Sexton undergoing a bit of trouble to begin the moto, Lawrence wasn’t worried in the slightest about his Honda teammate challenging him near the checkered flag...which led to the first moto narrative being won by the 2023 champion, where he then looked to continue his streak into the following round of racing as well. Amongst the final moto of the day, Lawrence continued to embody fluidity and a smooth style amongst deteriorated terrain — leaping atop the peaks of various hillsides with stab(s) of the clutch and steady throttle twists, to gather the initial race lead while numerous other opponents would quarrel for the second-place position and spots thereafter. He could sense that Chase Sexton was charging forward though, taking subtle glances over his shoulder when speeding through acute-angled corners and over the largest jumps on the circuit. And around twelve-minutes in, was when Sexton would make his first (of two) attempts at the lead, but as Chase went down, it appeared to be smooth sailing on behalf of the Australian from that point forward. However, as Jett began to cruise (per se) along with Chase’s charge of fury in the final moments, the action on the racetrack would begin to reach a boiling point — with the number twenty-three rivaling the number eighteen, with only minutes to go! Yet despite the well-respected efforts of the Illinois native, it was Lawrence who managed to (again) thrive under pressure; this time, staying composed while leading by only bike lengths, to garner a one-one performance and an overall victory!
