The talent of Ty Masterpool was something that couldn’t be second-guessed as the green flag waved for practice rounds at Washougal, as the newfound 450cc mx rider would (again) showcase brilliant technicality and incredible speed aboard his Kawasaki machine. Though quite the change, in regard to soil composition from his native territory of Texas, Masterpool immediately translated his prowess amongst ruts and deepened terrain, to that of the Pacific Northwest. He would capture sixth in the overall practice standings before unleashing his clutch when launching from the starting grate, to begin the two-moto afternoon sequence; immediately contending for fourth as the narrative unfolded. His ability to attack the whoop section before the finish-line was incredible, where he leapt into the rollers atop his foot-pegs and made sure to blitz through the final three to four moguls with tenacity throughout the opening ten minutes of action — pulling away from Freddie Noren, who was the first non-factory rider who trailed him! Masterpool would keep the likes of Aaron Plessinger at bay through the halfway point, proving that his speed from earlier in the year was anything but a fluke — and maintained his stance (ahead of the KTM athlete) throughout lap twelve, of the sixteen-circuit contest! Plessinger was searching for a way to push his chassis ahead of the Texas native, but it was to no avail...and it would be Masterpool who ultimately obtained sixth, as the checkered flag was thrown! For the second round of racing, Ty would reside just inside the top-nine to begin the sixteen-lap main event, believing that he could sustain an exceptional sense of intensity throughout the entirety of the moto. He would be pursuing ClubMX Yamaha’s Garrett Marchbanks, who was riding extremely well; and around the halfway point, Masterpool could sense that Marchbanks was on the move forward (after overtaking Adam Cianciarulo). The factory Kawasaki rider had now descended to seventh, and it was guaranteed that Masterpool was going to try and make a move on the Floridian standout...but he would run out of time. Yet even with that, Ty was able to keep both, Phil Nicoletti and Colt Nichols at bay; which was an astounding accolade, given the experience that he lacked in comparison to the two veteran riders! Masterpool would blitz the whoop section through the final five minutes of action, generating enough speed to obtain eighth (in the moto) for eighth overall as well!
