COLT WHITAKER

What’s your name and where are you from?

Colt Whitaker and I’m from Greensburg, Indiana.

What classes do you race?

51cc Sr and 51cc Open.

How did you get into motorcycles?

My dad and my Papaw have always been motorcycle enthusiasts. They've ridden most of their lives. When I was 2, my Papaw decided he wanted all of his grandkids (six girls and two boys) to learn how to ride, so he bought all of us dirt bikes. I started on a Honda CRF50 with training wheels and never looked back!

Tell us about your first race.

My first race was a Loretta Lynn Qualifier at Baja Acres in April 2018. I had just picked up my Cobra JR that week and crashed pretty hard during practice. I was scared to race it and ended up racing my Honda on the little track. When the gate dropped, I went forward about six feet and crashed the first of many times that race and I finished last. Talk about throwing me to the wolves! We still laugh that maybe that wasn't the best place for me to start my racing career. At least it helped me build some character!

What other sports do you like?

I used to play baseball and basketball but decided I wanted to focus all of my time and effort on riding this year. I've been swinging a golf club a bit while we've been on break. I don't really want to compete, but I'd like to know how to play.

Describe a typical day at the track for you.

Race days are the best! My dad and I get up early and eat breakfast and walk the track. We prep for morning practice, if there is one and then attend the rider's meeting. I do some stretching and relax before my first race. In between motos, I normally ride my bike and hang out with my friends. I get a snack, rest, and watch racing videos to find ways to improve in my next race. After racing is over, I usually get another snack and then help pack up.

Favorite meal to have before you race?

Cereal. Cocoa Krispies are my favorite right now.

Best moment on a motocross bike?

Winning my very last race ever on my JR. I only raced a couple of times during my first year and then put in a lot more work last year. It finally all came together.

Best road trip story.

I would say the best moments of traveling are all of the cool things we see on the road, like the giant basket building on the way to Briarcliff MX and all of the kids I've met at each race.

What’s your favorite track to ride?

East Fork MX. It's fun to ride!

Who is your favorite professional racer and why? Eli Tomac because he rides a Kawi and I'd love to race for Team Green one day! I met him at Ironman last year, and he took a picture with me and signed my shirt. It was the day before the race and he didn't have to come over and talk to me, but he did. He's a really cool guy!

Who would you like to thank for helping you out?

My mom and dad, my sisters, grandparents and other family, and Minton Cycle. They have all been instrumental in helping me get where I am today. I couldn't do this without them!
